| Taiwan is a beautify island home to over twenty
two million
Chinese of various ethnic and provincial backgrounds. IT was a
protectorate of the Chinese Empire in 1206 and became a province of
China in 1885.
The Dutch Invaded Taiwan in 1624 and remained as colonists for 37 years. The Spanish invaded in 1626, but were driven out by the Dutch in 1642. Taiwan was restored to Chinese mainland during the Ming Dynasty (1661) after the victory of General Cheng Cheng-kung. The Japanese occupied Taiwan from 1895-unit the end of WWII in 1945. The Republic of China (ROC) was established on the mainland in 1912. Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father, created a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" to replace the China dynasty. The nationalist government moved to Taiwan in 1949 and took jurisdiction over it along with the other offshore islands of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu. |
